is IRC?
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, as the name implies it allows you to chat.
You connect to a IRC network with your software, join a channel then you can chat away to people!

is a network?
A network is a group of servers linked together to provide a server. Lots of
servers all over europe for example have linked together to form Quakenet IRC, this allows a greater
user base and better connections as it allows you to connect to a server that is located close
to you.

is a Channel?
A channel is place where many people meet to chat. When you have joined a channel
anything you say in it can be read by everyone else in the channel and you too can see everything
that they say. A channel has a topic which is usually something to do with the channels purpose,
this is controled by the operators of the channel, they have a @ symbol before their name.

I connect to IRC?
In order to connect to IRC you need an IRC client, this allows you see whats
going on and chat. You will probably need to download one, below is a list of some popular IRC
clients:

| 5. How do
I join a channel?
Load up your software and connect to a IRC server. Once you are connected you
can join a channel by typing:
/join #channelname
After you have done this and pressed enter a new window should appear in your IRC software, this
will be the window for the channel you joined. All the conversation of the channel will appear
in this window as well as a list of everyone on the channel.

I change my name?
To change your name you type:
/nick new_name_here
This name cannot contain spaces or punctuation, after you have typed this and pressed enter your
nickname will update and appear changed in the channel list. Also this name change will be displayed
in any channels that you are on like so:
*** skoo is now known as skoo-away

| 6. How do
I message someone?
In order to message an individual you can type the command:
/msg nick_here message goes here spaces are ok
And this will probably open a new window with with a 'chat' to the person you message. Depending
on what software you are using there will be other ways to do this, such as, in mIRC if you double
click on a nickname in the nick list on a channel it will open up up a 'chat' window to that user.
